Believe Them

People will show you who they are, or even better they will tell you who they are, the very first time you encounter them. The problem becomes, do we believe them, the first time? The answer should be yes but we often excuse their words and behavior as we continue to get to know them. What usually happens then? You guessed it they end up showing us who they are again maybe a few months down the road or even a few years and we are left feeling devastated or even broken without them. Here's the truth though, you saw the red flags right from the beginning but you ignored them. You saw the bad or inconsistent behavior in the beginning but thought to yourself that with enough love and patience, that can be changed. You fell in love with the idea of the relationship but not the actual person that showed up from day one. People are consistent, sometimes not with their words, but with their actions. They will show you what's meaningful to them, how they spend their time, and how they speak about loved ones right from the jump. The greatest lesson you can learn in life is that when someone shows you who they are believe them ... the first time (thank you Maya Angelou). Our job is to not excuse the red flags but to see them for what they are and then move on ... the first time.
